The Importance of Dental Health

Studies show that for optimum cleaning, a person has to brush twice: one before breakfast and another after dinner. When a person brushes before breakfast, a toothpaste component called fluoride protects the enamel and the other parts of the mouth from severe bacteria infection brought by plaque after eating. It also protects the teeth from acids that the enzymes in the mouth produce after the food is chewed.

When a person brushes hours after dinner, it allows the saliva enough time to neutralize the acid content of the mouth so the enamel is not easily prone to damage brought by the bristles of the toothbrush. Brushing must last for two minutes because that is the time needed for the fluoride content to completely react to protect the enamel and disinfect bacteria. Gargling after brushing also helps. It adds protective enzymes that take care of the remaining bacteria plaque present in your mouth even after brushing. Aside from proper brushing, one must also visit his dentist once a month for cleaning. Intensive cleaning takes care of the hidden areas in the teeth and gums that a toothbrush cannot normally reach. If these areas are not cleaned, they will still be damaged no matter how many times a person brushes. The dentist also provide other services like restorations and the addition of protective crowns to the teeth to further prevent the teeth from decay. The journey to perfect dental health does not end there. One must also be particular with the kind of dental products they use. For tooth pastes, those with mild components and high fluoride content are advisable. For mouthwash, the best choice is the brand that has Xylitol because this component also acts as a bacterial inhibitor. With this, it is assured that a person’s dental health is in top condition.
